Tamela (Tammy) Coates, KC, FCIArb. accepts appointments as a mediator, preferably those involving complex and/or commercial litigation matters.

In May, 2023, Tammy retired from active practice as a senior commercial litigator after 35 years. She has extensive experience with respect to a wide variety of commercial disputes in a number of industries, including the telecommunications, energy, and financial and professional services sectors. Tammy has also consistently been a “go to” strategic advisor, providing advice on operational, risk management, and reputational issues, both internally (as an office Managing Partner and member of the National Executive of an international law firm) and as a trusted “grey hair” advisor to clients.

While she has extensive courtroom experience, Tammy has largely measured her career successes as counsel by the significant matters that never saw the inside of the courtroom: disputes that were avoided entirely through strategic intervention and those that she was able to resolve short of trial or contested proceedings. Many of her most significant cases have never been reported, or even publicly filed.

 

Tammy understands the practical, business, and finanical  realities necessary to arrive at  a reasonable settlement or resolution and what it takes to manage both the people and the problem. She works with the parties and their counsel to tailor each mediation  process to best address the issues and achieve the parties' goals, including adjudicative mediation.
